Reading Pages 0-25
I thought it was really interesting how Chief Bromden referred to everyone as machines. Some machines are born with malfunctions, and others the malfunctions come throughout their lives. I'm not sure, I'm pretty positive, he didn't use the word malfunction though. As I started the book, I found it to a little bit boring, but once McMurphy came into play. He seemed to add a little bit of life to the book. The little bit of life that shows that they're really in an insane asylum. Does anyone else think that Bromden is bound to have an outbreak? He said that he can hear in the early pages but others think he's deaf. Being called deaf and dumb by Billy Babbit, who seems to have a pretty bad speech impediment, should be pretty insulting to Bromden. He better have an outburst at all of those fools making fun of him.

Jared, you would like the character of McMurphy. He likes to create trouble almost, and knows what he wants to do and does it. I do think Bromden might have an outbreak. He is so paranoid about so many things going on in the hospital that I feel like the author set it up so now after 10 years he is having his breaking point. Wouldn't you think that after 10 years in the same place you wouldn't have fear rather confidence and power? I know confidence in an insane asylum is not the right word, but that idea? Jared, he pretends to act deaf so no one notices him and leaves him alone, but he is 6'7 how could no one notice him?!?!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of the machine to be used as a metaphor in the book. After reading your blog I am able to see this connection you have made. One malfunction that Cheif Bromden has is that he feels unable to communicate and articulate what is going through his mind. Perhaps whats so intriguing about McMurphys character is that he will be able to fix this malfunction.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you Jared that the book itself was a little boring and unexcited at the beginning but a good and interesting book is because of the characters. Each character in a story determines a lot in how a reader may see the story as. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by Bromden having an outbreak but I don't really sense anything that would cause him to start anything in a violent or unnecessary way. It seems that he is pretty calm as of now and keeps to himself for the most part. I don't know whats going to happen later on but I don't think he will blow up his secret just yet. There is a lot more he probably wants to figure out before he confronts himself or anyone else
